Memphis has always been a staple on the United States’ music seen in the South. It has a founding role in each of these genres which include: Blues, Gospel, Rock n’ Roll, and even certain styles of Country music. Some of the exemplary artists that got a huge start in Memphis feature Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B. B. King. Respectively, each of these artists have attained a global presence and remain in the history books for the achievements. On the other side, Opera has great prevalence in the area, and there is even an opera company called Opera Memphis. Beale Street is a popular area for live music performances, and a lot of upcoming/big named artists get a lot of recognition performing there. More recently, a growing Southern Hip-Hop scene booms from there. Three 6 Mafia is the most mainstream group coming from the area. Selling well over 15 million records plus getting an Academy Award for their song “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp” from the Hustle and Flow soundtrack. They became the first black music group to win an Academy Award for best song. Memphis continues to be a hotbed/innovator for musical production in this industry.

When most people think of Memphis, the first things that probably come to mind are Graceland and Elvis. Even though Memphis has a number of museums and a zoo, the city is most known for its music. There are a number of tours you can take that include Graceland, Sun Studios and Stax Records Museum.

Downtown Memphis in the evening is the place to be to hear the music. During a stroll down the Historic Beale Street you will be able to hear a variety of music including jazz, blues, rock-n-roll and soul music. There is plenty of parking so it is convenient to drive downtown and go to different areas.

Some of the downtown hotspots for blues music are Hueys, Silky O’Sullivans and Rum Boogie Cafe. Others include the Blue Monkey, Newbys Bar and Restaurant, BB Kings and Black Diamond.

Another option for music during the afternoon and away from the hustle and bustle of downtown is Old Millington Vineyard and Winery. It is located 14 miles from downtown Memphis and has offers live music on Sundays from 3:00 to 6:00 from March thru October.

Memphis is also home to many businesses and industries but will always be best known for its music.

The city of Memphis, in Tennessee is a wonderful place to visit. There is something for everyone in the family. Memphis is rich in music history and attractions. However, these are not the only places to visit when you are there.

For the youngest in the family the Memphis children’s museum is a fun learning experience. The experiences range from aviation to health. The children can sit in a flight simulator, a real airline cockpit. From there they can find themselves jumping through arteries of a heart, or riding a bicycle on Mars to learn about health. What child would not want to ride a bicycle on Mars. The Memphis zoo is also a great outing for the youngsters.

For the adults a trip to Graceland is a must. Elvis is a music icon and there is something great to see for every Elvis fan. You can walk through his home, seeing where he ate meals and watched television. You can see where his grave site is and leave flowers at the site. You can also see his automobile collection. The tour of his private jets shows a look at how Elvis lived when he was on tour. Once you finish the tour you can visit the souvenir shop and get every type of memorabilia imaginable.

When you tour Memphis you will find yourself busy everyday.

When you think about Memphis, what is the one word that comes to mind for many people? If you guessed Elvis, then you would be correct. Elvis has become an icon in the city of Memphis, but this city has much more music history than that. If you take a stroll down Beale Street you will find many popular bars and music venues that play Blues, rock-n-roll, soul, and jazz. Many of these places have ties and roots to some of the most famous singers, such as, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. The best way to take in all that Memphis has to offer is to take a stroll down Beale St. Visit the Rum Boogie Cafe, B.B King’s or Silky O’sullivan’s for some authentic soul, gospel, jazz and rock music. Another type of music that is popular within Memphis is located at the north end of Beale. It is the New Daisy Theater, which showcases national alternative acts such as Cat Power, The Strokes and The Raconteurs. Then at the other end of Beale St, is the historic Orpheum Theater, which is Memphis’s top venue. The theater is host to summer film festivals and Memphis’s most important national events and concerts. As you can see, Memphis has a rich history of music and the only way to really discover this is to take a trip through all the music clubs and venues.
