Music Tour: To Get A True Feel Of Memphis

When you think about Memphis, what is the one word that comes to mind for many people? If you guessed Elvis, then you would be correct. Elvis has become an icon in the city of Memphis, but this city has much more music history than that. If you take a stroll down Beale Street you will find many popular bars and music venues that play Blues, rock-n-roll, soul, and jazz. Many of these places have ties and roots to some of the most famous singers, such as, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. The best way to take in all that Memphis has to offer is to take a stroll down Beale St. Visit the Rum Boogie Cafe, B.B King’s or Silky O’sullivan’s for some authentic soul, gospel, jazz and rock music. Another type of music that is popular within Memphis is located at the north end of Beale. It is the New Daisy Theater, which showcases national alternative acts such as Cat Power, The Strokes and The Raconteurs. Then at the other end of Beale St, is the historic Orpheum Theater, which is Memphis’s top venue. The theater is host to summer film festivals and Memphis’s most important national events and concerts. As you can see, Memphis has a rich history of music and the only way to really discover this is to take a trip through all the music clubs and venues.
